The Arctic Lux
Destination

Tromsø

An island city above the Arctic Circle. Proper infrastructure, world-class wilderness. One of the few places where the polar extremes are genuinely accessible without expedition-level planning.

When to Come

Winter

November – March

The polar night lasts from late November to mid-January. This is the aurora season. Temperatures average –6°C. Snow is reliable from December. The best whale watching is in November and December.

Spring

April – May

The light returns rapidly in spring — from 2 hours in January to nearly 24 hours by May. Snow lingers on the mountains. Ski touring above the city is possible into April.

Summer

June – August

The midnight sun runs from mid-May to late July. Temperatures reach 15–18°C. Hiking, kayaking, and sailing season. The city is busy with cruise arrivals through August.

Autumn

September – October

The mountains turn. The aurora returns in September. October is among the most pleasant months — reliable aurora, crisp air, quieter than peak winter. Whale season begins.

Neighbourhoods

Sentrum (City Centre)

The commercial and cultural heart of the island. The Tromsø Cathedral, the Arctic Cathedral across the bridge, the fish market, and most restaurants are here.

Stakkevollan

A residential area on the north side of the island with excellent views across Tromsøysundet and quieter access to the water.

Tromsdalen

On the mainland, connected to the island by the Tromsø Bridge. The Arctic Cathedral sits here. Cable car access to Fjellheisen from the south side.

Where to Eat

Smak

The best tasting menu in the city. Seasonal, locally sourced, and technically precise. Book well in advance.

Bardus Bistro

Relaxed neighbourhood bistro with good natural wine and reliable Nordic cooking. Good for a weeknight dinner.

Emma's Drømmekjøkken

Long-standing institution. Norwegian classics with a confident hand. A reliable choice for a traditional Arctic meal.

Raketten

On the waterfront. Simple but well-executed. Good for lunch and early dinners watching the harbour.
